Brains

Recently I came across these pics on a  BBC Science & Environment page:

"The brain's wiring diagram is not [...] fixed. It is thought that changes occur after each experience, and so each person's brain map is different - an ever changing record of who we are and what we have done." 

This echoes the words of Daniel Tammet cited in an earlier post:

"Every thought, every daydream, every emotion alters the brain's fantastically intricate structure in subtle but definite ways."

"Our minds are miracles - immensely intricate webs of gossamer light inside our heads that shape our very sense of self and our understanding of the world around us. Moment by moment throughout our lifetime, our brains hum with the work of making meaning: weaving together many thousands of threads of information into all manner of thoughts, feelings, memories, and ideas."

Intermezzo

Not quite cyanotype...and not scheduled.

Yet the substance of this lightweight piece has been hiding in the studio for a while. Papillae is made of Mohair (quite a lot of air actually!) and Nylon thread.
35cm in diameter, 45cm high (the red bit), suspended overall about 150cm long.

Cyanotyping

Testing various papers combined with all kind of negatives. To print 'cyano' these are exposed to various light sources - thus juggling with umpteen parameters.

Impressive is the impact of January-February's afternoon sun. It is as powerful as the 125 Watt UV bulb I use ... and for free.

Blueprint

By chance I came across a photographic printing process, Cyanotype.

First attempts; a feather 'printed' on thin silk organza.

Grub

It's a relative of this puppet.

Working on curved models for three-d pieces. Looks like this one can almost 'stand' on its own.

The material are printouts of images that failed to be useful, they were way too dark. Now I'm glad I paid and took the pics along! The thick paper turns out to be just right for purpose.

Flight

The sky after sunset - seen from a plane.

Later on, when descending, the lights of the city look like a planetary system. Some light dots flowing like particles in a river, others still. The strange beauty of civilization...

Spider time

From our kitchen window we watched this spider making and mending its web day by day. It's intriguing to see how it produces and fixes the silk to the spokes of its net. Yet, I'm still not sure how spiders fabricate the framework of their web... Here's how it goes.

While, as a youngster, I was running for dear life when meeting one of these creatures I now find them rather beautiful!

Seascape projection at Artlink

Fr-Agile at Artlink - Documentation by Jo Millett

This summer Seascape [Fr-Agile] had its premiere here in Hull. Although we showed this piece at Southsquare Gallery two years earlier, here at Artlink it was another kettle of fish. The exhibition spaces are so different. At Artlink we projected at a 4:3 ratio while previously it was shown at a 16:9 widescreen ratio, see here.

And else

While compiling the docu of works shown at Artlink this summer I'm gathering my thoughts upon what I was working on earlier this year.

In doing so images of a proposal (maquette of another projection on threads, 2010) resurfaced. They relate to two earlier posts Watching the clouds and Movement (silent). But then... life took another turn.
Yet -  it's nice to rediscover these pics!

Working @ Artlink

Since the very pleasant Private View on 27 July I've been working in Artlink's exhibition space to complete Shoal. Yesterday this piece has been finished.

Whenever I happen to visit this gallery on a windy day (and it's often windy up here in Hull) I feel like being 'blown' through that wide entrance door - it swings open magically - into the gallery space. It is this perception that led to the shape of 'Shoal'. The stones, donated by the public for Artlink's 30th anniversary, strive to trace the form of this air flow. The resulting shape resembles that of Spurn. Like the members of a society form groups and gather as family, friends (or fiends …) the donated stones are assembled by form, shape and character.

My first show in 2½ years after an involuntary break. Happy to be back again.

Thank you to all who made this exhibition possible, namely Jo and David; your help to install the work was very precious! Thanks for support to Stefan, Martin and Martin and all who donated stones. And last but not least, thank you to Kate and all who work at Artlink.

Shoal

Artlink's 30th Anniversary Exhibition

Two installations related to the Humber area will be shown, Seascape [Fr-Agile] and Shoal, which has been commissioned by Artlink. Using stones donated by the public, Shoal will develop as a work in progress during the first week(s) of the show.
