LIQUID LIGHT

A site-specific installation as part of SETTING OFF at RED Gallery Hull
22 Jan – 21 Feb 2016

Water ripples projected on suspended drafting film and on surrounding walls. Seven film sheets form an arch between a pool and the skylight above
dimensions: 2.7m x 70cm x room height

A wooden frame and pond liner form a silent musical instrument. Water acts as the medium conveying the message. Light projects water ripples on the suspended drafting film and on the surrounding walls as enlarged drawings in motion.

The video below shows projections of dripping water on sheet one to four and then the entire installation.

STUDY IN RED

One of three site-specific installations currently shown at RED Gallery in Hull exploring the space, light and materials.
Threads of mohair wool connect floor and skylight 'drawing' three separate layers in the space, more or less curved. The walls reflect the red. Matt paint on the floor records the motion of visitors as they move about this piece. The space is about 4x5 metres and 2.2 metres high.

AUFBRECHEN

Aufbrechen (Geman)
1. to break; to break up; to force open
2. to set off; to start; to leave

4 sheets of black glass (20 x 30cm each, broken), sand (ca. 300 x 360cm), piano wire, light & shadow

Four black glass panes lie or float on a bed of sand. While the first glass is whole and embedded in the sand, the following three panes are broken into ever smaller fragments. This group of shards lifts off the ground whilst getting more and more chaotic - as if all wanted to become sand again.

This installation was part of Setting Off @ RED Gallery, Hull, Jan-Feb 2016 -  just weeks before RED's building at Osborne Street was demolished.

Thanksgiving

Thank you to the many people who helped Changing Landscapes come true:
  • David Priestman spontaneously came over from Hull and helped installing for a whole week. Thanks for your knowledge and ideas - it is a pleasure to work with you!
  • Benno Hungerbühler, a big thank you for carefully cutting/adjusting the 'Seascape' video - and this in the middle of the final edits to your own documentary, La Troisième Langue (!).
  • Roland Bitterli provided and installed the metal carrier, the (invisible) backbone for the projection screen and partition wall.
  • Jolanda Schaad and Stefan Weigert, thanks for your precious help on the final stretch before the opening.
  • Grateful to Gaye and Jörg Detmold, to Stefan's parents, Simon Mugier and Salare Kordy for helping with transport and much more.
  • Christoph and Marécar provided a home away from home for three islanders during the installation period.
  • Thank you to Walter Kugler for his thoughts and introductory words about my work at the opening, including a poem by Hull's Philip Larkin.
  • And last but not least, ddeimann, curator, thank you for seeing one of my airy pieces in Berlin and for being curious enough to set all this into motion!

Pride of Hull

The evening of 2 July, on board the 'Pride of Hull' with a skibag among my luggage that raises concern when checking in... Yet two stern faces light up to broad smiles when I declare the content of the bag - and we are waved through.
8:30pm, on the Humber, it's the first time I see this stretch of the estuary from the sea - love this landscape.
And then, by sunset, we pass Spurn Point, this finger of land that separates the North Sea from the Humber Estuary - the very place 'Fr-Agile' is about. This is the site where the footage of Seascape has been recorded. And this piece is the content of the skibag...
Next morning, after a quiet night, in Rotterdam.
Ready to travel on in the heat of early July in trains that, as it turns out, are not really fit for these temperatures...

Packing

Making work is one thing; packing and getting it ready for transport is a different kettle of fish.

Eight pieces of work magically fitted into this boot; some of them large scale.

And then...

Seascape screen wrapped into ventilation ducting - and 'trespassed' into a skibag.
